About Bespoke Stay Japan

Bespoke Stay Japan is an independent English-language research site about staying in Japan. It exists for one reason: the details that decide whether a stay works are usually the ones booking sites leave out.

Whether a tattooed guest can use the bath. Whether "private bath" means an in-room onsen or a normal bathtub. Whether the hotel will hold your luggage before check-in. Whether the pet fee is the one on the official page or the one on the booking site. We research those, publish what the sources actually say, and tell you where they disagree.

How a stay profile is researched

  • We start from the property's own pages, in Japanese as well as English, because the English version is often shorter and less specific.
  • We record the date each profile was checked, and publish it on the page.
  • We separate what an official source states from what is inferred or reported by guests, and label which is which.
  • Where sources disagree, we publish both figures rather than picking one. A pet fee listed as ¥11,000 by the property and ¥14,300 by booking platforms is shown as a discrepancy to confirm.
  • Conditions that depend on staff judgement, such as tattoo policy, are never reduced to a yes or no. The conditions are published with them.

What this site does not do

  • We do not take bookings, hold reservations, or handle payments.
  • We do not contact properties on your behalf as part of the free site.
  • We do not guarantee that a policy will still apply on your travel date. Japanese accommodation rules change, and bath and pet policies change more than most.
  • We do not accept payment from properties for inclusion or for favourable wording.

Please confirm before you rely on it

Every profile is a research note, not a promise. If a detail would change your trip, confirm it directly with the property before booking. That is not a legal disclaimer we are hiding behind: it is how the site is designed to be used, and every profile says so.

How the site is funded
