If the total is more than 160cm, you need a reserved "Seat with Oversized Baggage Area" on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Booking it costs nothing extra. Boarding without it costs ¥1,000, paid to the crew on the train.
The rule does not apply everywhere, and that surprises most travelers. Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka is covered. Tokyo to Sendai, Niigata or Kanazawa is not. The section below lists which is which.

Which lines have the rule
Reservation required for bags over 160cm total: Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo–Nagoya–Kyoto–Shin-Osaka), Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima–Hakata), Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo).
No reservation required: Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen. These trains have luggage areas on board, but you do not book them and there is no fee. A regular reserved or unreserved seat is enough.
If your trip mixes both, the rule applies only to the covered legs. A Tokyo–Kanazawa–Kyoto itinerary needs the reservation for the Kyoto leg and nothing for the Kanazawa leg.
How to measure your bag
- Measure height plus width plus depth. Wheels and the extended handle count.
- Total 160cm or under: no reservation needed. It goes in the overhead rack.
- Total over 160cm up to 250cm: reservation required on the three covered lines.
- Total over 250cm: not permitted on board at all, on any line. Use luggage delivery.
- The limit applies to each bag on its own, not to everything you are carrying. Two cases of 140cm each are fine without a reservation.
- If you measure close to 160cm, book the space anyway. The reservation is free and the margin is not worth ¥1,000.
Is your suitcase actually over 160cm?
Most travelers never need this rule, and the ones who do are usually carrying the largest case in a standard set. Typical outer dimensions, with wheels and handle, add up roughly like this:
- Cabin bag, around 55 × 40 × 25cm: about 120cm total. Well clear.
- Medium checked case, around 67 × 45 × 27cm: about 139cm total. Clear.
- Large checked case, around 77 × 52 × 31cm: about 160cm total. This is the one that lands on the line.
- Extra-large case, around 81 × 55 × 34cm: about 170cm total. Reservation needed on the covered lines.
- These are typical figures for comparison, not a substitute for measuring. Cases sold as the same "size" vary by several centimetres between brands, and a hard shell packed full measures more than the label.
How to reserve the space
It is not a separate ticket. You choose a seat that has the baggage space attached to it, at the same price as any reserved seat. Two types exist: a "Seat with Oversized Baggage Area", which is a last-row seat with the space behind it, and on some trains a "Seat with Oversized Baggage Compartment", which is a lockable compartment near the door.
You can book at a ticket office, at a green ticket machine, or online through the Shinkansen reservation services. A Japan Rail Pass does not exempt you from the rule, but it does not add cost either: reserve the oversized baggage seat the same way you reserve any other seat.
These seats are limited per train and sell out first on weekends, holiday periods and early morning departures. Book them with your ticket rather than closer to travel.
If you board without a reservation
The crew charges ¥1,000 on the train and directs you to whatever space is available. You are not thrown off and your ticket stays valid, but you may be moved away from your seat and asked to keep the bag somewhere less convenient.

When to send the bag instead
Over 250cm you have no choice. Below that, sending the bag ahead is usually worth it when you are changing base cities mid-trip, when the covered legs fall on a weekend and the spaces are gone, or when either end of the journey involves stairs and crowded local lines.

How this changes hotel choice
The train seat is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the chain either side of it: hotel to station, local line to the Shinkansen platform, then arrival station to the next hotel.
With a bag over 160cm, a slightly less central hotel with elevator access, a simple station route and reliable delivery receiving beats a central hotel reached through two crowded transfers and a staircase.
